Corporate Responsibility

People

Rentokil Initial has an all-encompassing 'Code of Ethics' as well as a range of Corporate Responsibility Policies, which deal specifically with our people and people we come into contact with, such as customers, suppliers and members of the wider community. All these policies are available to download.

At the time of adoption, we realised that we needed to extend our management systems within the businesses to ensure that any practices at variance with these policies were first analysed and then addressed. Since then, the company has been involved in a phased extension of our management systems to achieve this.

Employees

This is a key area for the company, given our large number of employees. Here, the company has the following challenges:

  1. Ensuring integrity of service through recruitment, training and employee development.
  2. Effective management of communication to inform all employees of the company's goals, methods of operation and systems.
  3. Ensuring managers adequately manage the systems in place.

The company has always been committed to high standards of behaviour in relation to all its employees and, following the adoption of additional CR policies in 2002, it supplemented this commitment with the introduction of a new measurement tool.

This tool takes the form of eight 'Employment Good Practice Guides' which are similar in structure to the Environmental Good Practice Procedures and set high standards against which local procedures and practices must be checked. The guides span the entire employment process, including recruitment, performance, communication, training, development and organisational change.

Customers

The customer is the centre of the service universe at Rentokil Initial, and we continually work to:

  1. Provide quality service to contracted levels.
  2. Maintain fair and open dealings.

Suppliers

Our supplier profile is limited, in that the major factor of production is our people, however we concentrate on the following areas:

  1. Securing the best value bought-in products or services without undue risk.
  2. Ensuring that supplier selection is fair, transparent and free from inducement.

Customers and Suppliers

Central CR policies governing our relations with customers and suppliers were adopted early in 2002, and in 2003 the company developed supporting Good Practice Guides (guides) for customers and suppliers. These guides were distributed to the businesses at the end of 2003. The Procurement Services team has implemented its Procurement Good Management Practice across all procurement operations. This includes a documented process to ensure a fair, transparent and inducement free procurement operation is in place. The supplier assessment process has been extended to include supplier performance in social, environmental and ethical practices.

In a limited number of areas, Rentokil Initial's businesses are operated by joint ventures or through franchisees. In these cases, Rentokil Initial will use its influence to seek implementation of similar policy standards, monitoring and review to those it expects in its wholly owned operations.

The Community

As discussed in the earlier section, the nature of our activities and the structure of our organisation mean that community contact is led by the businesses, with initiatives needing to be approved by line management or the executive board. We have, however, adopted a Community Involvement Policy, which provides all Rentokil Initial businesses with principles to guide their dealings with members of the public and the community. We are also developing a centrally lead programme of community involvement.

Many of our businesses are already active in a range of different community initiatives, examples of which are highlighted in the CR Review 2006, 'community' section.

Donations for UK charitable purposes in 2006 amounted to £95,000. Payments are made to a wide range of charitable organisations both in the UK and overseas. Encouragement is given to a matched giving scheme whereby the company matches donations made by employees.
