Corporate Responsibility

Introduction

The Company

To understand our approach to Corporate Responsibility (CR), it is necessary to understand some key features about Rentokil Initial:

  • Rentokil Initial provides low impact support services like washroom services, parcel delivery, indoor tropical plants and pest control. These services positively improve the working environment, and carry limited environmental risk.
  • Rentokil Initial operates in over 50 countries around the world, exposing it to many different languages, cultures, operating and legal environments. This means that our policies and procedures need to be universal but flexible, and our CR roll-out needs to be progressive but realistic.
  • Rentokil Initial has a decentralised structure which relies on lean, local management teams to drive its businesses forward. Local management buy-in is important to ensure that ethical considerations are a part of the management process.
  • Rentokil Initial’s principal asset is people. Our success is entirely dependent on the efforts of the people we employ around the world. As a company, we foresee that the greatest benefit from our future CR activities will come from our employees.
  • Rentokil Initial is not a consumer goods company. Our customers include large numbers of small and medium-sized businesses, for whom quality and value of service are paramount.
  • Rentokil Initial provides the vast majority of its services direct to the customers premises.
  • Rentokil Initial makes extensive use of mobile technicians to service many different customer sites on a daily basis. This method of service and our emphasis on direct selling account for our fleet of 16,600 vehicles worldwide.

For further information on the nature of our services and the service delivery model please see the Description of the Company section of the CR Review 2007, available to download in the Reports and Achievements section.

The development of Corporate Responsibility

A strength at Rentokil Initial has always been its people management. Rentokil Initial prides itself on being a company where individuals are given the opportunity to succeed, and are rewarded and developed based on their success.

Another area of achievement at Rentokil Initial has been health and safety, and environmental management. This leadership, supported by our Research and Development (R&D) has helped to differentiate the company’s service offering and proven to be a key source of competitive advantage.

Corporate Responsibility Policies

In recent years, Rentokil Initial has underlined its commitment to responsible citizenship by adopting central Corporate Responsibility Policies. These policies formalise the principles which have always been fundamental to our business and complement the local activities carried out by each business in every country in which we operate. The policies apply to all of our businesses in over 50 countries and are reviewed by the board on an annual basis.

This process began in 1999, with the board’s adoption of the Health and Safety Policy and the Environment Policy. In early 2002, the board added policies on business ethics and relationships with employees, customers, suppliers and the wider public. Additional information about these policies can be found in the drop-down menus.

The board as a whole is responsible for ensuring that ethical considerations form part of the management function at all levels and our Chief Executive is the main board director with responsibility for CR matters. He reviews CR practice and performance with the board every six months, or more frequently if necessary.
